Celtic myth of the Salmon of Knowledge to celebrate the process of education.
Daniel is fast gaining a reputation as an artist with a talent
for reawakening Celtic myths through his large 'standing stone' sculptures.
"I think we're ready to take a fresh twenty first century look at our collective Celtic heritage and celebrate its riches." Explains Daniel
LUGH The Many Gifted Lord is unveiled in Castle Park School Dalkey 2009
This sculpture is designed to address two main issues arising from discussions with Castle Park School. The first of these is Castle Park's identity as a modern Irish School, wishing to acknowledge its rich cultural heritage. Second is the educational ethos of the school, expressed as an aspiration to imbue the child with a well-grounded and broad based education. An education, which addresses mind, body and spirit.
The Lugh sculpture addresses these issues in several ways. The choice of Lugh as Samildanach (master of all the arts), represents the ancient Celtic ideal of an all round cultural hero.
The piece represents a coming together of old and new symbols in an educational theme. It draws on ancient mythical forms and is executed in a unique contemporary fashion. It is accessible to both adults and children alike. It illustrates the various aspects of the schools multi faceted educational programme.
